Book by Zephaniah Benjamin

Benjamin Zephaniah is probably one of the most high-profile international authors writing today, with an enormous breadth of appeal, equally popular with both adults and children. Most well-known for his performance poetry with a political edge for adults and ground-breaking performance poetry for children, Benjamin also has his own rap/reggae band, and has appeared on Desert Island Discs. He is in constant demand internationally to perform his work: he is (he thinks) Nelson Mandela’s favourite poet, and is the only Rastafarian poet to be short-listed for the Chairs of Poetry for both Oxford and Cambridge University. Benjamin lives in East Ham, London.
Benjamin Zephaniah's debut novel is a powerfully written and shocking story which is brought to life by his simple and direct style.
In Face, Zephaniah tells the story of Martin Turner, a confident joker and leader of the 'Gang of Three'. An accident in a stolen car leaves Martin unconscious in hospital. When he wakes up he realises that the accident has left his face severely scarred. Now, Martin is on the receiving end of people's prejudices and his life has changed forever.

Martin is a good-looking, self-assured boy who accepts a ride home from a drunken acquaintance and ends up in a horrible accident--badly burned, his face completely disfigured. Life as it was before is over.he loses his girlfriend and his friends, and finds that people are making judgements about him and how he feels without even knowing. As Martin struggles through the reconstruction of his face, he is also working hard to reconstruct his life. His character, however, remains intact. There are startling truths in this story, written with clarity and insight, which make it utterly believable and impossible to read without heartfelt empathy.
