The Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) is part of the U.S. Army War College and is the strategic level study agent for issues related to national security and military strategy with emphasis on geostrategic analysis. Studies produced by civilian and military analysts concern topics having strategic implications for the Army, the Department of Defense, and the larger national security community. This is part of SSI's "The Letort Papers" series, named after an 18th century explorer and fur trader in the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania, which is meant to showcase topics of interest to the defense academic community that may not correspond with SSI's mainstream policy-oriented publications. Paraphrased from the Foreword by Douglas C. Lovelace, Jr., SSI's Director: The American military's mission in Iraq required Soldiers to apply a variety of creative problem-solving skills and resourcefulness as the Army adapted to the conditions of a counterinsurgency campaign in Operation Iraqi Freedom. Our Army evolved continuously on the battlefield, effecting radical changes in doctrine, organizations, training, and materiel, while achieving a synergistic effect greatly enabling our success. The author outlines several of the popular schools of thought and articulates cogent arguments as to why the Army of the future must be prepared to fight our nation's wars across the entire spectrum of conflict. As we look to the role the Army will play in the future, it is essential that we look back to that adaptation in Iraq to determine what contributed to the successful conclusion of our mission there. In doing so we will help to ensure that the adaptations made to win in Iraq are not lost and that the Army will be better prepared for victory in future counterinsurgency campaigns. This Paper takes a vital first step in analyzing some of the most important adaptations that the Army undertook over the past 10 years of conflict. The author serves on the Army Staff in the Current Operations Division and has extensive experience in training and leading troops from the platoon to the battalion level and saw firsthand the evolution of counterinsurgency strategy at the tactical and operational levels in Iraq.
