Published in April 1913, A Boy's Will was Robert Frost's first true volume of poetry. (In 1894, he had persuaded a printer to make two copies of a five-poem collection called Twilight.) It was immediately hailed by critics and poets: William Butler Yeats called it "the best poetry written in America for a long time." North of Boston (1914) showed greater technical mastery, and is regarded by many as his finest volume. Dramatic, colloquial, and firmly located in the New England landscape, North of Boston established Frost's characteristic idiom. His third book, Mountain Interval (1916), contains favorites like "Birches' and "Christmas Trees," as well as his best-known poem, "The Road Not Taken" ("Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-/I took the one less traveled by, / And that has made all the difference").
