The foundation of discipleship is sound, scriptural doctrine, but the value of such doctrine is often misunderstood by the modern church. Doctrine can be dry and dull, but when it flows from the story of Scripture, it can be full of life and love. This kind of doctrine, steeped in Scripture, is critical for disciple-making. And it's often overlooked by modern pastors.
In Hearers and Doers, now in paperback, one of today's leading evangelical theologians
- makes the case that pastors, as pastor-theologians, must interpret Scripture theologically to articulate doctrine and help cultivate disciples;
- shows why scriptural doctrine is vital to the life of the church; and
- argues that local pastor-theologians should be the ones delivering scriptural doctrine to their communities.
With arresting prose and striking metaphors, Vanhoozer addresses the most pressing problems in the modern church with one answer: teach sound, scriptural doctrine to make disciples.

"A powerful, practical, and grace-filled vision of discipleship"

In Hearers and Doers, Kevin J. Vanhoozer makes the case that pastors, as pastor-theologians, should interpret Scripture theologically to articulate doctrine and help cultivate disciples.
"This delightful book provides pastors with a rich vision for church renewal. Vanhoozer gives a deeply theological account of how disciples can participate in the triune God's work. Highly recommended!"
--J. Todd Billings, Western Theological Seminary, Holland, Michigan; author of Rejoicing in Lament
"Vanhoozer shows us what it looks like when the Christian church 'does' the truth, when our making of disciples includes the waking of disciples--waking us up to the metaphors and myths of our secular age so we can follow Christ with faithfulness and passion."
--Trevin Wax, LifeWay Christian Resources; author of Eschatological Discipleship and This Is Our Time
"A powerful, practical, and grace-filled vision of discipleship that our local churches today desperately need."
--Kristen Deede Johnson, Western Theological Seminary, Holland, Michigan
