Publié ici dans sa version originelle, Bug Jargal est le premier roman de Victor Hugo, qu'il a écrit à l'âge de seize ans. Il y relate la révolte, en 1791, des noirs de Saint-Domingue et y dénonce l'esclavage. Ce texte à résonance sociale contient déjà en germe l'œuvre future de Victor Hugo. Il constitue aussi un précieux témoignage sur la vie et les préoccupations d'un adolescent de génie. C'est ce que souligne François Graveline dans la présentation de cet ouvrage, le premier d'une série de textes anciens choisis par des écrivains contemporains.
