Présentation de l'éditeur

New York a man, who wore the dress and spoke the language of the Whites, but in his appearance, habits, ideas, and ways was more like a Red I ndian. He was then in the employment ofthe United States Government as Indian interpreter, at Sault de St. Marie, to which northern outpost he was soon to return. His had been a life of strange incident and adventure. When yet a boy, he had been carried off from his fatherâs home in Kentucky by a marauding band of Shawnees, from whom he was transferred to the Ojibbeways, by a chief of which tribe he was purchased, and adopted by his wife, in place of a son who had died. At first he had hope of making his escape, but, finding this impossible, he became naturalized among the I ndians, sharing their adventures and hardships, and living among them as one of themselves, during thirty years.
