Synopsis
Yosef Haim Brenner (18811921) was a Russian-born Hebrew-language author, and one of the pioneers of modern Hebrew literature. Born to a poor Jewish family in Russia, he escaped from the Russian army to London, then emigrated to Palestine in 1909. He was murdered in the Jaffa Riots of 1921. He left behind an impressive and influential body of work, including short stories and novels such as Breakdown and Bereavement, which is set in Palestine in the years before World War I, when the tragic pattern of Arab-Jewish relations was taking shape.
