Avid hunting fans called the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon the "supreme gundog", and this versatile "all-game" dog from the Continent proves just that. Developed by Dutchman E K Korthals in the 19th century, the breed has been fostered by French sportsmen to become an adaptable, professional hunting companion. Although the Griffon's personality is one of the breed's calling cards - at home he's at once goofy and serious, aloof and passionate, laid-back and driven - this is not a "pet-only" canine. The Griffon was born to hunt, whether it's upland game birds, waterfowl or fur-bearing animals; this is a surprisingly capable hunter that points, retrieves and tracks in heavy cover, marsh and water. Stoked by the desire to please his master, he naturally succeeds at field, agility, obedience and hunting tests and trials - he's a real team player. As a family companion, this breed, with its naturally shaggy and "unkempt" look, is much easier to live with than other high-powered gundogs. A little moody yet sensitive and responsive, he's great with children and welcoming to guests. This book offers a readable and enjoyable introduction to this less-common sporting dog, including a look at the breed's history and characteristics, puppy selecting and training, everyday care, health, showing and much more. Author Nikki Moustaki has reached out to key members in the Griffon fancy and truly captured the essence of this one-of-a-kind hunting dog.
