Synopsis

The term access services first emerged as a library department name in the 1980s. The range of activities and the channels of service delivery in access services have continued to change since then. This survey investigated the evolution of access services in ARL member libraries and identified changes in the range of services, organizational structure, staffing levels, and budget since 1991. The results provide a snapshot of access services departments in research libraries at the beginning of the 21st century.
