Jerry Raine was born in Yorkshire and raised in Somalia, where his father was a Detective Superintendent in the British Police. Back in England, he finished his education at Box Hill School in Surrey. At the age of sixteen Jerry travelled to Australia on his own and stayed for over two years. He worked as a farm hand in the bush and as a caravan fitter in Sydney, and made his singing debut in some of the city's seedier bars. After returning to England Jerry worked at a succession of manual jobs before settling into a career as a bookseller in London, working mainly at crime specialist Murder One. In 1986 he was a winner of The Mail on Sunday fiction prize and his first novel 'Smalltime' was published in 1996. The Literary Review compared it to George Orwell and Bill Naughton. He has written nine more novels since, all available on Kindle. As a singer-songwriter Jerry has been a support act for several US country singers and Irish folk legend Christy Moore, and also did a whole UK tour with Iris DeMent in 1998. Jerry currently lives in London where he still writes songs and records, and occasionally performs. A selection of his songs can be heard on the SoundCloud website.
Ex-nightclub bouncer Brooklyn Rhodes makes his living from counting cards at blackjack. In a London casino he meets Roulette Rex who is being blackmailed by some Russian gangsters, and in a Shepherd's Bush cafe he meets Katya, a Russian waitress having problems with her husband. As Brooklyn becomes embroiled in both of their lives, a figure from his past comes back to haunt him, wanting a large amount of cash that he thinks Brooklyn stole. Trying to sort out three problems at once isn't easy, and if Brooklyn can make some money along the way then all well and good. From the mean streets of London to the sea streets of Hastings, Brooklyn leaves a trail of bodies in his wake. ‘Jerry Raine is the master of the suburban crime novel.’ The Times. 'This guy should be known as Acid Raine. The prose is tight and economical, but the effect he creates is one of poison and menace. Brilliant.' Yorkshire Post.
