Prophecies of a 19th-century German mystic who spent seven years suspended between life and death
• Focuses on the mysterious “language of the spirits” that the seeress spoke and wrote
• Contains a biography of the Seeress of Prevorst’s life and illustrations of all known examples of her spiritual script and diagrams
Known as the Seeress of Prevorst, Frederika Hauffe (1801-1829) was a German mystic and clairvoyant who was subject to convulsions and trances that caused her to remain bedridden from 1822 until her death seven years later. While in this state suspended between life and death, she received revelations from the spirit world about the triune doctrine of body, soul, and spirit, and she drew precise geometrical diagrams, often in complete darkness and with astonishing speed. The spirits of the dead were said to be in constant attendance on her and were even occasionally seen by others. Her most remarkable gift, however, was the ability to write and speak in what she called “the language of the spirits,” a unique coded alphabet that incorporated numbers and primitive ideographs.
Using his scientific expertise to decode her secret language and diagrams, John DeSalvo examines the life and revelations of the Seeress of Prevorst and her importance in light of spiritual development over the nearly two centuries since her death. Preceding the rise of Spiritualism by two generations, the seeress’s prophecies and teachings threw open the door to the spirit world. With one foot in each world, her life and work offer a portal into mystical realms as fascinating today as in her own time.

John DeSalvo holds a Ph.D. in biophysics and, for more than 20 years, scientifically studied the Shroud of Turin. A former college professor and current director of the Great Pyramid of Giza Research Association, he is the author of four books, including Andrew Jackson Davis: The First American Prophet and Clairvoyant and Decoding the Pyramids. CHAPTER 11
The Sun and Life Spheres
Besides this inner language that we have discussed in the previous chapter, the Seeress had also constructed diagrams that she called inner circles. She had drawn eight of them. Seven are called Sun Circles and one is called the Life Circle. She also referred to them as the “Sun and Life Spheres,” since they were actually three-dimensional spheres that she drew in two-dimensional projections on paper. She said they were the “prophecy of her future” and the “day-book of her past.” She labeled these circles with script from her inner language and numbers. The Sun Circles, which are the outer circles in this series, are the “sphere of the spirit,” and the Life Circle, which is the interior one, is the “sphere of the soul, or mental-life.”1
I must point out that these circles were not just a theoretical construct for her but were real objects that she said encircled her and were fastened to her left side. She said that the orbits of these circles seemed to come out from the pit of her stomach, pass over the chest, and pass around close by her left side. You can picture this as a sphere of about ten inches in diameter placed in the left-front-side of the body and including within it the heart and part of the stomach.
She said they lay heavy upon her and on the nerves and were composed of what she called nerve-spirit. She could actually see and feel these circles. These circles, she said, were always in motion, and every seven years the seven outer Sun Circles fell away and seven more appeared. Thus each Sun Circle represented one year.
The most remarkable thing connected with these circles is that every day the tally of a person’s good and evil is summed up and expressed in a number on these circles. This number is then carried forth into the next day. At the end of every day this number expresses and reflects the exact balance for or against the individual based on all his thoughts, words, and deeds up to that moment in his life. Thus, at the end of his life there stands a number expressing the exact moral account of the individual. At the moment the soul steps out of the body it carries with it, written on its chest, the exact sum of the good or evil of its whole existence. Thus we have in our own souls a self-registering principle going on in its operations independent of our control and presenting our exact spiritual condition at the moment of our entrance into the spirit world. She stated that all events in our world have a number or numerical value associated with them, thus she was always calculating events in her life and the current value of this number for her. Some events were “advances” and some were “losses,” and this was reflected in the sum of this number.
The manner by which the Seeress drew these diagrams under spirit influence deserves special attention. Kerner says that she threw off the whole drawing “in an incredibly short time, and employed in marking the more than a hundred points, into which this circle was divided, no compasses or instrument whatever. She made the whole with her hand alone, and failed not in a single point. She seemed to work as a spider works its geometric diagrams, without any visible instrument. I recommended her to use a pair of compasses to strike the circles; she tried, and made immediate blunders.”2
She had two systems of calculation, one for the outer or physical world and one for the inner or spiritual world. So rapid was her knowledge of this language and this system of calculations that at any time afterward she could detail in an instant any variation, however slight, in any copy of her writing or drawing. On a copy of her Sun Circle, being brought to her by Dr. Kerner a year after she had made the original, she immediately detected the omission of a single point. She had kept no copy herself.
She said that every person carries these Sun and Life Spheres, which on paper do look like circular calendars. The Life Circle, which is the inner sphere, is in a sense a mirror to the Sun Circles. “The Soul is a mirror of the Universe” is a well-known axiom among mystics. She explained that when her soul enters and occupies the center of her Sun Circle, she has the ability to see the past and the future, and the infinite. She can also see the world in all its laws, relations, and properties, which are implanted in it through time and space. She sees all this clearly without any veil interposing. She loses these abilities as she moves out from the center of this circle. She said, “But in proportion as the soul is drawn from the center by the attractions of the outer world it advances into darkness and loses this all-embracing vision and knowledge of nature and its properties.”3 Thus most people do not and cannot occupy the center of their Sun Circles, only the prophet and advanced mystic can do this.
But at one time, very early in our history, people had this inherent ability to be in the center, but it was lost over time. Many religions talk about these golden days of mankind. Now, this ability to occupy the center of the Sun Circle is found in clairvoyant states when the person is withdrawn from the influence of the senses and can enter into the center of their Sun Sphere. This is the last stage of clairvoyance, which we have discussed.
