It is true, of course, that much research for this book has been done from available official records, the ultimate source of written history. But even more has been drawn from the vivid recollections of the Cavalrymen who fought, tasted the brassy bile of fear, shared the fierce exultation of victory, or were drenched in the dark despair of death.

MAJ J. D. Coleman (1930-2005) worked with the 1st Cavalry Division's contributing authors to compile the original edition of Air Cav. Author of Pleiku, Incursion, and WONJU: The Gettysburg of the Korean War, MAJ Coleman served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1952 and from 1963 to 1979. He was an Airborne Infantryman in the 187th Regimental Combat Team in the Korean War and PIO with the First Cavalry Division in Vietnam. He continued serving as PIO at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and Fort Ord, California, and later as Chief of Command Information at Fort McPherson, Georgia. He retired as a Lt. Col. in 1979.
