Synopsis

If the first volume of Springfield Memories depicted the many facets of diverse peoples in Springfield, Illinois, working to fulfill their dreams, Book Two reflects the fruits of those efforts. In this edition, covering the years from the 1940s through the 1960s, much will be recognized or recalled. Stores and industries with familiar names and purposes are pictured in contrast to the often unknown or long-forgotten world of the earlier edition. Many buildings and businesses pictured are familiar to us today, though perhaps in another form. In many instances these pictures bring back memories of places, businesses, events or people that once were a part of our lives, or of our parents’ and grandparents’ lives. Rapid changes during and following World War II affected not only the world but our local culture, leaving familiar landmarks of the ‘40s, such as neighborhood gas stations and grocery stores, to be repurposed or demolished. An industrial age blossomed and withered during this time span. We are, once more grateful to The State Journal-Register for initiating this project to collect images from the Springfield community and to the Sangamon Valley Collection at Lincoln Library for sharing its collection of photographs. This book adds to the treasury of memories documenting the city's development.
