Booker T. Washington (1856-1915), born into slavery in Virginia, was nine years old when the Civil War came to an end. Largely self-taught but taking full advantage of every opportunity from others to learn, he eventually received the education he had long sought. With the support and encouragement of the administrators of Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute, his alma mater, he established Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute (now Tuskegee University) in Alabama. He believed that only by their deeds and their examples would the former slave population of the southern states earn the respect they deserved as human beings and would they be accepted as equal citizens. Though this stance was criticized by more militant activists, it won praise and admiration from presidents, artists, and philanthropists in the United States and abroad. The name Booker T. Washington graces the entrances of many academic institutions across the nation today. His legacy is in the institution he established, the achievements of its students and their descendants, and the hope he still inspires.
