UNTO THIS LAST is an essay on economy and social justice by John Ruskin, first published in 1860 in a series of four articles in Cornhill Magazine. Ruskin said himself that these articles were very violently criticized, which forced the publisher to stop the publication after four articles. But Ruskin countered the attack and persevered, publishing and releasing the four articles in book form in 1862. UNTO THIS LAST had a profounding and lasting impact on Gandhi's philosophy and life, with Gandhi deciding immediately to change his own life according to Ruskin's teachings.
