In these essays, Stevenson gives advice on a variety of subjects, ranging from inspiration and direction to the technical methods of writing. He explains the basic tools of word choice, rhythm in verse and prose, plotting, and style, with a discussion of the morality of writing--the potential for good that literature has, and the responsibility of the writer to wisely use that power. Newly designed and typeset in a modern 5.5-by-8.5-inch format by Waking Lion Press.

Robert Louis Stevenson was one of the greatest authors of the nineteenth century. Stevenson still ranks as one of the most translated authors in history. Classic books such as Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are still widely read today and have been made into many critically acclaimed films throughout the years. This is a collection of essays that Stevenson wrote on the technique of writing. The Art of Writing is notable for also giving insights into Stevenson's writing on the novels Treasure Island and The Master of Ballantrae.
Robert Louis Stevenson, born in 1850, traveled extensively during his short life (died 1894), which enlarged his imagination to the life of pirates, sea adventures, and stories particularly popular with young adult readers. He took seriously the task of writing, failing to achieve success with his early ventures, but attaining a kind of immortality with Treasure Island, Kidnapped, the Jekyll and Hyde story and others.
