Close Quarters Although it was first published in 1947, Gilbert began this novel in the years immediately before World War II and didn't finish it until he returned from active duty. Set behind the walls of the residential Close of Melchester Cathedral, it's a classic British mystery in which a young Scotland Yard detective is asked to interrupt his holiday to find out if the accidental death of Canon Whyte was ... It has been more than a year since Cannon Whyte fell 103 feet from the cathedral gallery, yet unease still casts a shadow over the peaceful lives of the Close’s inhabitants. In an apparently separate incident, head verger Appledown is being persecuted: a spate of anonymous letters and random acts of vandalism imply that he is inefficient and immoral. But then the notes turn threatening, and when Appledown is found dead, Inspector Hazlerigg is called in. Investigations suggest that someone directly connected to the cathedral is responsible, and it is up to Hazlerigg to get to the heart of the corruption.|It has been more than a year since Cannon Whyte fell 103 feet from the cathedral gallery, yet unease still casts a shadow over the peaceful lives of the Close’s inhabitants. Vendeur : MURDER BY THE BOOK, Warwick, RI, Etats-Unis
Trade Paperback. Etat : As New. 1st Prtg. 1st printing, thus. A fine, unread copy of the trade paperback. The first mystery by one of the most acclaimed mystery writers of our time. The Close at Melchester Cathedral was normally a quiet place where canons, vicars, vergers, and others involved in running the great cathedral lived in tranquility, until somebody among them started waging a hate campaign against the white-haired senior verger. This troubled the Dean greatly, so much so that he invited his favorite nephew down from Scotland Yard for an unofficial visit. And what young Sergeant Pollock found was so disturbing that he was obliged to call in his superior officer, ChiefInspector Hazlerigg, a thick, square man whose deceptively sanguine exterior conceals a first-rate intellect. But even his presence is not enough to stop the murderer in their midst from canying out a very deadly plan. Published in 1947, ten years after it takes place, "Close Quarters" is the first novel from this acclaimed writer, who went on to win grandmaster and lifetime achievement awards from mystery associations in England, the U.S., France, and Sweden.
