Synopsis
Doctor Therne's personal fears meet the tragic legacy of other doctors' careless ignorance and spawn a malignant crusade against vaccination that will ultimately create many more victims. H. Rider Haggard writes to alarm and educate his public, and creates a very engaging villain to carry his message. How long can a cowardly manipulator hide his dishonesty?

Rider Haggard, was an English writer of adventure novels set in exotic locations, predominantly Africa and a pioneer of the Lost World literary genre. He was also involved in agricultural reform throughout the British Empire. His stories, situated at the lighter end of Victorian literature, continue to be popular and influential.
