The International Classification of Diseases (ICD), developed and maintained by the World Health Organization, is now in its 10th version. The clinical modification (CM) is a US modification that facilitates using the codes for the diseases to identify diseases and causes of death in medical records, medical care review, and ambulatory and other medical care programs as well as for basic health statistics. It begins with a 340-page index to diseases and injuries, keyed to the over 600-page tabular list, which is by biological system. Among the categories are diseases of the nervous system; diseases of the skin and subcutaneous tissue; pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperum; and injury, poisoning, and certain other consequences of external cause. ICD-10 has been expanded to six and seven characters, and designed to add new diseases easily. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
