Synopsis

In responding to the financial crash of 2008, both the Bush Administration and the Obama Administration have relied on prescriptions developed by John Maynard Keynes, the most important economist since Marx. But should we be relying on Keynes? What did Keynes actually say? Did he make his case? This title concludes that he did not.

Présentation de l'éditeur

When the world financial system began to fail in 2008, world governments intervened decisively. They intended not only to stimulate the economy, but also to jolt it back to borrowing and spending as usual. All of these actions were taken from a playbook devised by British economist John Maynard Keynes, by far the most influential social thinker of the past century. The George W. Bush administration followed standard Keynesian prescriptions. The Obama administration, guided by an economic team of impeccable credentials, did so even more forcefully. Not all economists agree. Some critics of Keynesian orthodoxy ask: isn t the root problem that Americans have borrowed too much? Will even more borrowing, this time by governments, really help us out of the bind we are in? Isn t this a bit like trying to cure a hangover with more of the hair of the dog that bit you? Who is right here? Lewis tackles this question directly. He returns to the source, the General Theory. What did Keynes say? Are these ideas well supported and convincing? If not, why not? Lewis concludes that Keynes did not make his case, that, on the contrary, the anti-Keynes case is much stronger. If Keynes was wrong, then so are the economic policies of virtually all world governments today.
