The reader found in Book One of The Owl Hoot Trail: Gold in the Red Desert, Clifford Brown had fled his home state of Georgia ahead of a murder warrant for a man who had actually been killed by a corrupt appointed official. His travels allowed him to be in the right place at the right time, to witness another murder, also by dishonest men in power, although the second killing took place on the great plains of the Wyoming Territory. During the following year, he is the one person responsible for the righting of this wrong and the return of stolen property to its rightful owner. There, he also falls in love with a beautiful raven-haired woman who becomes his wife. Book Two, The Withlacoochee Renegades, is the story of their return to Georgia during times many considered more horrible than the war itself, "The Unholy Reconstruction Period," where Corruption outnumbered Christianity in the Occupational Government. Clifford received a telegram telling of the murder of one of his brothers and the threat of the same to his other brother and father. Clifford Brown and his bride arrive to find the worst, and not only to this family, but to almost all of the home folk. He then forms and leads a vigilante group, that the local newspaper names, "The Withlacoochee Renegades," until most of the corruption is cleaned from the area and many of those responsible for their cruel deeds are either dead, arrested, or have fled the state. The cost of this cleaning is so great that one wonders where a man finds the strength the bear it.
