Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint John of the Cross were sixteenth-century Spanish Carmelite reformers and two of Christianity's most influential mystical writers. Teresa's Interior Castle describes the soul's journey through seven spiritual dwelling places, while John's Dark Night of the Soul examines the purification that precedes divine union. Interior Castle was written in 1577 and first published in 1588.

Saint John of the Cross (1542-1591) was a Spanish Carmelite friar, priest, poet, and mystic whose writings became foundational works of Christian spirituality. Working alongside Saint Teresa of Ávila, he helped reform the Carmelite order and endured imprisonment and severe persecution because of his efforts.His best-known works include Dark Night of the Soul, The Ascent of Mount Carmel, The Spiritual Canticle, and The Living Flame of Love. Through poetry and theological commentary, he explored spiritual purification, detachment, contemplation, and the soul's journey toward union with God. He was canonized in 1726 and named a Doctor of the Church in 1926.
