Synopsis

The Book of Enoch is the most notable extant apocalyptic work outside the canonical Scriptures. It describes the fall of the Watchers, the angels who fathered the Nephilim (cf. the bene Elohim, Genesis 6:1-2). The fallen angels went to Enoch to intercede on their behalf with God after he declared to them their doom. The remainder of the book describes Enoch's visit to Heaven in the form of a vision, and his revelations.

The Book of Enoch is traditionally attributed to Enoch, a figure mentioned in the Book of Genesis as an ancestor of Noah. The text itself is now understood to be a compilation of writings produced by multiple authors between the third century BCE and the first century CE, reflecting the religious and intellectual milieu of Second Temple Judaism. It survives most completely in Ethiopic translation.

Richard Laurence (1760-1838), Archbishop of Cashel, was an Irish scholar and clergyman whose translation of The Book of Enoch in 1821 played a central role in introducing the text to modern European scholarship. His work remains a significant early contribution to the study of apocryphal literature.
