Nella Larsen (1891-1964) was an important figure of the Harlem Renaissance and one of the most distinctive voices in early twentieth-century American literature. Best known for her novels Quicksand and Passing, Larsen explored themes of racial identity, social mobility, and psychological conflict with remarkable subtlety and restraint. Though her literary career was brief, her work has come to be recognised as a vital contribution to American modernism and to the literature of the Harlem Renaissance.
