It all began as a pleasant motor trip on Eulalie Island for Michael and Fleur Revel. When a storm forced them into a pub in the quaint village of Whipple they decided to make the best of it and join in the local drinking contests. Why not? But then the unthinkable happens and the lovely young Fleur disappears and the only ghastly clue to her whereabouts comes in the next day's mail - a finger! This sets Michael and some local characters off on a hunt of death for an unknown fiend who threatens the whole village.

Berrow was a New Zealander, though none of his novels is set there. He was married, spent some time in Gibraltar in the 30s (his early books are set there and he seems to have known the place pretty well), and was in the military service for six years during and just after World War II. He wrote 20 novels between 1936 and 1954, all of which are published by Ramble House.
