This novel tells the story of two young ladies, cousins, who take a cruise through the Mediterranean, meanwhile chaperoned by their captain. The young women enjoy seeing the sights, but their adventure takes a romantic turn when they encounter some American war ships at Leghorn (Livorno). The author Arabella Kenealy (1859-1938) became a doctor in England when women were only just entering the medical profession. Ten years into her career she contracted diphtheria and was forced to retire from practice, but she had already written several novels and it was a natural progression for her to become a full-time writer. Kenealy developed some controversial views and theories about women, sexuality, and eugenics, undoubtedly influenced by her experiences as a doctor, and she not only introduced these topics into her fiction but wrote treatises such as 'Feminism and Sex-Extinction' and 'The Human Gyroscope: A Consideration of the Gyroscopic Rotation of Earth as Mechanism of the Evolution of Terrestrial Living Forms.' The author’s first novel 'Dr. Janet of Harley Street' was a popular success when it was released in 1893. Kenealy’s second novel 'Molly and her Man of War', published in the same year, failed to gain attention. This first reprint in 125 years provides an opportunity to sample not only a curious Transatlantic romance but the author’s theories about gender roles, marriage and sexuality in the late 19th century. This new edition includes an introduction by Gavin L. O'Keefe and a bibliography of the author's works.
