Synopsis

Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell was a Victorian novelist and short story writer. She wrote about the lives of the very poor and those people who had a love of literature. In 1851 Cranford was published in serial form in a magazine called Household Words edited by Charles Dickens. The setting is a fictional town called Cranford where Mary Smith and her friends are introduced through a series of episodes. The most significant event is the return of a beloved brother.

Elizabeth Cleghorn Gaskell, née Stevenson (29 September 1810 – 12 November 1865), often referred to simply as Mrs. Gaskell, was an English novelist and short story writer during the Victorian era. She is perhaps best known for her biography of Charlotte Brontë. Her novels offer a detailed portrait of the lives of many strata of society, including the very poor, and as such are of interest to social historians as well as lovers of literature.
