Volume 1 is on IBD and Ulcerative Colitis, and Volume 2 is on IBD and Crohn’s Disease. All areas that were covered in the second edition have been expanded and updated. New sections include one addressing etiology and pathophysiology of IBD, including environmental influences and effect of age at onset, and one with a focus on aggravating factors in the IBD patient such as infectious agents, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and pregnancy.

Theodore M. Bayless, Professor of Medicine and Director Emeritus of the Meyerhoff Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at Johns Hopkins is the first Sherlock Hibbs Professor in Inflammatory Bowel Disease. A clinician, researcher and an educator, Dr. Bayless has been a member of faculty at Johns Hopkins since 1964 and has provided patient care for over 4000 patients with IBD. Stephen B. Hanauer, MD, is Chief of the Section of Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Director of the Logan Center for GI Clinical Research, and Co-director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research Center at the University of Chicago. Research interests include Diagnosis and treatment of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, screening for cancer in inflammatory bowel disease, general gastroenterology
