Barton D. Schmitt, MD, FAAP, is a professor emeritus of pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He founded and served as medical director of the after-hours call center at Children's Hospital Colorado for more than 30 years. He continues to teach pediatric residents in the continuity clinics at Children's Hospital Colorado and Denver Health. Dr Schmitt has been a prolific writer. His American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) book Pediatric Telephone Protocols is used in most pediatric offices. The electronic version is found in several electronic health records. His Pediatric Symptom Checker for parents is found on many office websites. It is also available as a smartphone app. The AAP version is called KidsDoc. The telephone protocols also have more than 500 matching parent handouts. These Pediatric Care Advice handouts are available within the AAP Pediatric Patient Education™ collection. Dr Schmitt also authored the parenting book My Child is Sick! Dr Schmitt has received 2 AAP awards: the C. Anderson Aldrich Award for contributions in child development and the Education Award for contributions in pediatric education.
