Dr. Curtis N. Van Alfen is a proven leader and trusted mentor to those with whom he has interacted. The former Dean of the College of Education at Brigham Young University, Academic Vice President of Brigham Young University’s Hawaii Campus, national consultant and speaker has received numerous national awards and served extensively in his community. He has mentored a loyal following of individuals and organizations with his “uncommon, common sense approach”. His career has been characterized by a brilliant style of experiential mentoring through the use of stories, quotes and introspective discussion. He has honed his ability to understand people and their situations in a way that creates vision, understanding and culture. His greatest goal with his wife Jeanette has been to serve his family and instill in them the understanding that they can accomplish great things and be their best self. His hope is to be able to extend his unique approach to all that wish to achieve their very best and live a fruitful and fulfilling life while leaving a legacy of significant contributions in life. As a result of his leadership style, he has cultivated rich experiences and a wealth of practical knowledge while serving others. He excelled in his educational, professional and personal endeavors. He served as Superintendent of Schools in Tooele County, Utah; Coordinator of Secondary education, Chairman of Graduate Education, Assistant Dean, Associate Dean, Dean of the College of Education at Brigham Young University, as well as, Academic Vice President of Brigham Young University's Hawaii campus. He was a member of the American Association of School Administrators, the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Phi Delta Kappa, Psi Chi: National Psychology Honorary Scholastic Society, and Phi Kappa Phi. He has given many national speeches, presented papers at conferences, and published articles in professional scholarly journals, as well as being cited frequently cited in scholarly articles. His national awards include: National School of the Month, 1991 Award of Excellency; Developmental Mentor, and Certificate of Merit: Mentoring and Coaching, from the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
