Synopsis

"Dan O Bannon famously crafted his screenplays using a self-designed system which he called dynamic structure. This book outlines how O Bannon s method differs from those of other well-known screenwriting gurus, and illustrates with examples from classic (and not-so-classic) films how dynamic structure can be applied to craft narrative and character. O Bannon also includes his insights on subjects such as the logic of the three-act structure, the role of the producer in screenplay development, and the psychological principle known as hedonic adaptation, which has a unique effect on the structuring of screen stories. Dan O Bannon is one of the most acclaimed screenwriters of his generation and a giant among fans of science fiction, horror, and action cinema. This is an opportunity for burgeoning writers and filmmakers to learn at the feet of a master. While O Bannon did teach his dynamic structure technique at universities, his course was never available in written form until now. Many of O Bannon s ideas, such as the fight-based story structure model and the centrality of hedonic adaptation to story construction, are unique to Dan s system, methods available to screenwriters for the first time in this book. Release of Prometheus (the Prequel to Alien) in June 2012 will increase interest in all Dan O Bannon projects."
