Like *The Prairie Traveler*, this book would have been a useful guide for anyone wanting to immigrate to the Northern United States, and can be examined today as a look into daily life for those on the wild frontier. RANDOLPH BARNES MARCY (1812-1887) was a Brigadier General in the U.S. Army. His work greatly assisted pioneers and settlers in the Western migration across the United States in the 17th and 18th centuries. Marcy was born in Massachusetts and graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1832. In the course of his military duties he spent time in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Utah, and the Rocky Mountains area. His extensive knowledge of the terrain, climate, and obstacles made Marcy the ideal candidate as author for The Prairie Traveler, which helped thousands of unprepared emigrants travel the unknown Western territories.

American civilization will have taken possession of the land from the great river of the West to the very shores of the Pacific. It can not be entirely in vain that any one contributes that which he knows from personal experience, however little, to aid in preserving the memory of the people and the customs of the West in the middle of the nineteenth century. The wild animals that abound on the great plains to-day will soon be as unknown as the Indian hunters who have for centuries pursued them.. The world is fast filling up. I trust I am not in error when I venture to place some value, however small, on every thing which goes to form the truthful history of a condition of men incident to the advance of civilization over the continent a condition which forms peculiar types of character, produces remarkable developments of human nature a condition, also, which can hardly again exist on this or any other continent, and which has therefore especial value in the sum of human history. This is the only apology which I have to offer for the anecdotes of persons and the sketches of frontier life which I have ventured to make a part of this volume. Such people will probably not again be found in the future life of the race, and unless some record be made of them, it is by no means certain that generations to come will not regard them as solely the creatures of fiction, in whose pages they have for the most part hitherto been described.

General Randolph B Marcy’s 1859 book, "The Prairie Traveler" is considered one of the most important guides that made possible the great Western overland migration of United States settlers in the last half of the 19th century. This later book, "Thirty Years of Army Life" is full of Marcy's keen observations of Indian life, hunting, and living in the unsettled western U.S. He knew a great deal about all of these from his many years in the west and from having led a troops of soldiers across the Rocky Mountains in the dead of winter without any loss of life, despite having run out of food during the last two weeks of the trip. Friend and father-in-law to controversial American Civil War general, George B. McClellan, Marcy served under that commander in the war. It's remarkable to us today that early white visitors to the west, despite their difficult circumstances, took time to observe the world around them in great detail. We owe a lot to accounts like that of General Marcy.
