American writer, naturalist, and explorer ERNEST INGERSOLL (1852-1946) wrote more than a dozen books on zoology and biology, including his contribution to the cryptozoological world, Dragons and Dragon Lore (1928). He studied biology and zoology under renowned scientist Louis Agassiz at Harvard University. He contributed to many newspapers and magazines in his lifetime, including The New York Tribune and Field and Stream; he also updated guide books for Rand McNally for 15 years. As an advocate for wildlife protection, he was dedicated in taking detailed field notes rather than the specimens themselves. He died at 94 years old in Battleboro, Vermont.

Other topics like the origin of the dragon are found, plus a complete overview of the dragon as being "the divine spirit of the waters" and "the dragon as a rain god." The ancient gods of the eastern world played both good and bad roles, which caused the legends of dragon and dragon-slayer to spring up. Many of the early gods were strongly associated with dragons and serpents, as the walls of many ancient temples will attest.
