James Joseph Walsh (1865-1942) was an American physician, historian, educator, and prolific Catholic writer whose work often examined the relationship between religion, medicine, science, and intellectual history. Trained as a medical doctor and deeply engaged with the history of medicine, Walsh became known for books that challenged simplified accounts of the Middle Ages and the Catholic Church's role in education, scholarship, and scientific development.Walsh wrote extensively on medical history, medieval universities, Catholic culture, and the lives of scholars whose work connected faith with learning. In books such as Catholic Churchmen in Science, The Popes and Science, and The Thirteenth: Greatest of Centuries, he argued that Catholic institutions and churchmen played a far more constructive role in the preservation and advancement of knowledge than was often acknowledged in popular anti-Catholic or anti-medieval narratives.Though shaped by the apologetic concerns of the early twentieth century, Walsh's work remains historically significant for its defence of Catholic intellectual tradition and its attention to the religious figures who participated in scientific and medical development. He is remembered as an important Catholic historian of science, medicine, education, and church history.

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Catholic Churchmen in Science is a historical study of Catholic priests, bishops, monks, and scholars whose work helped shape the development of science. James J. Walsh challenges the assumption that religious faith and scientific inquiry have always stood in opposition by presenting a series of learned churchmen who contributed to medicine, astronomy, mathematics, natural philosophy, and scientific education across the centuries.Walsh writes in defence of a broader historical record, showing how clerical scholars worked within universities, monasteries, and intellectual institutions that preserved learning and encouraged investigation into the natural world. The book places figures from Catholic intellectual history within the long development of Western science, arguing that many churchmen were not enemies of inquiry but active participants in observation, experimentation, and the transmission of knowledge. For readers interested in Catholic history, the history of science, religion and science, church history, and biographies of religious scholars, Catholic Churchmen in Science remains a useful and provocative work. It reflects the concerns of its age while preserving a valuable catalogue of figures whose scientific contributions are often overlooked in simplified accounts of the relationship between Christianity and modern science.
