The Sign of the Four is the second Sherlock Holmes book. Its complex plot involves service in East India Company, India, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, a stolen treasure, and a secret pact among four convicts and two corrupt prison guards. It presents Sherlock Holmes' drug habit and humanizes him in a way that had not been done in A Study in Scarlet. It also introduces Doctor Watson's future wife, Mary Morstan.

First published in 1890, the novel brings together Holmes's brilliant powers of deduction with a case that stretches from the streets of London to the distant reaches of the British Empire. When Mary Morstan seeks the help of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson to solve the mystery of her father's disappearance and a series of strange pearls sent anonymously over the years, the investigation leads to a complex story involving a secret pact, a lost fortune from India, and a trail of betrayal and revenge. Holmes's relentless logic and keen observation guide the search for the truth, while Watson finds himself increasingly drawn to Mary Morstan.Blending suspenseful detective work with the atmosphere of imperial adventure, The Sign of the Four remains one of the most memorable entries in the Sherlock Holmes canon.
