The solo pieces teach students to play with artistry and expression and reinforce the positions used in the Note Reading book: G positions, F position, and D position. They are encouraged to tell a story" through the music as they follow the many changes in dynamics, tempo, pedaling, articulation and octave shifts. Pieces are one to two pages in length; some have lyrics. Titles such as Bernie's Banana Tree, Rockin' Rhythm, and Waltz of the Giant Gorillas appeal to young musicians."
