Mom (Eileen) was indeed a woman of the “Greatest Generation” as she struggled through the Great Depression being forced to live in a Catholic boarding school caused by the reality of an abusive father who left the family, and a mother who could no longer support her, also as herself a mother of five during the hardships of World War 2 and the post war years. In addition, as with far to many mothers of her generation, Mom sent two sons off to war, one to Germany during the height of the Cold War in the late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s, and another to Vietnam in the late ‘60’s. Mom’s life was not short of angst, but her living was joyful through her relationship with God. Mom’s struggles were many throughout the course of her life, even in her final years, yet she made a life full of faith, love and hope. Though, as you will read, not without doubt, fear, and despair. Mom pretty much kept much of her life’s experiences and emotions within, many of those experiences and feelings we only learned through reading her prayer journal contained in this book. As with many of the courageous “Greatest Generation” it was personal faith, unwavering determination, and conquering hardship that built character, integrity, and an everlasting spirituality.
