Synopsis

What You Need to Know: An Introduction to Sociology discusses grass roots issues and employs relatable examples to help readers see the immediate and important connection between their lives and the societies and cultures to which they belong.

From the first chapter, students are encouraged to tap into their “sociological imaginations” to understand the applications of sociology and how it compares to other disciplines. They explore theories and learn systematic approaches to research.

With this foundational understanding, students then study culture, socialization, social structures, interactions and institutions, and groups, organizations, and networks. The book also addresses deviance and social control, inequality, and social change.

What You Need to Know: An Introduction to Sociology moves away from an overemphasis on details to focus on the ideas that make sociology both relevant and exciting.

Jargon-free and accessible, What You Need to Know: An Introduction to Sociology is written for introductory courses in the discipline.
