Synopsis

This text is written with a specific PLC course in mind that is offered at Purdue Polytechnic Statewide Locations including South Bend, Kokomo, New Albany, Columbus, Richmond, and Anderson. The goal is to be generic however the lab equipment requires some specifics. The goal of this text is to educate system engineers, not train factory technicians. The online videos attached to this text use software and hardware from AutomationDirect. This software is as close to open source as possible for programmable logic controllers (PLCs). The Do-more software used in the videos and referenced is a free full version download. While the intention is to have the equipment available in my lab to work with, the software does have a virtual PLC so that equipment is not needed to work on the projects in this text. Other brands such as Allen Bradley, Omron, and Siemens may also have this functionality. And finally, while AutomationDirect software and hardware are used for examples here, the goal is to discuss the programming and systems in a general way so that the equipment that is in your lab can be used with the same success. There is the possibility that the reader can follow along with the lab procedures using the software download at AutomationDirect with the simulation PLC.

John Piller has worked with machine controls and electrical construction, all the way from large building electrical systems, commercial fire alarm systems, jail and prison control systems, to monitoring sewer systems with embedded wireless sensors under manhole covers. He started teaching full time at Purdue in the Fall of 2011. Mr. Piller holds a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology from Purdue University.
