The poet Robert Lee Frost is known not only in the United States but throughout the literary world. No other American poet has earned, as Robert Frost has, four Pulitzer Prizes. Frost is read and loved not only by poetry lovers of various degrees of schooling but also by literary critics of varied accomplishments. Of the roughly 850 separate titles of works by Frost, one hundred are narratives, that is, ballads, short stores in poetic form, dramatic monologues, and dramatic dialogues, Robert Lee Gale’s book provides synopses of these hundred poems along with critical comments on them, mostly by publishing critics and biographers but occasionally by Gale as well. It is hoped that this book will enable readers of different backgrounds to turn, or return, to Frost’s poems with pleasure and possibly increased awareness of his unique appeal.Robert Lee Gale was born in Iowa, graduated from Dartmouth College in 1942 and from Columbia University in 1952. In between, he served in the United States Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946, in the United States, England, and France, and briefly in North Africa and Italy. He taught classes in American literature in the United States, Italy, and Canada. He has published widely, including books with Word Association Publishers on works by George Washington Cable, Walter Van Tilburg Clark, Robinson Jeffers, Norman McClean, D’Arcy McNickle, Anita Loos, Frank Norris, Dorothy Parker, Jack Schaeffer, James Welch, and Nathanael West. Retired from the University of Pittsburgh, Gale now lives in Pittsburgh.
