Synopsis

As pressure on the world´s water resources has increased, it has translated into new and increasingly interconnected challenges. There has been a shift from seeking solutions within individual scientific disciplines to seeking solutions in the interstitial spaces between scientific disciplines. There has also been a shift towards globalisation of both problems and solutions. Recognition of these changes has triggered awareness of the opportunity to draw ideas and possible solutions from a world of practical experiences in both similar and different contexts. New Water Policy and Practice aims to keep providing a platform for the world’s emerging water leaders and to support global efforts in capacity building for water management. In this Special Issue on Water Governance Leadership, we aimed at a balance of contributions from new and emerging water leaders (e.g. Master and PhD students, Post Docs, practitioners in government and the private sector) with foundational contributions from internationally recognised water leaders. This sixth issue presents a refreshed structure of five sections (including the Editorial), within which we have framed the articles, and we hope this makes the reading even more pleasant. The Outstanding Leadership Practices section showcase examples of outstanding leadership in water policy and practice. The provision of water, sanitation, and health (WASH) is recognized by the United Nations as a human right. However, drainage is not. The lack of drainage leads to flooding and can impact on quality of life and human health. This is particularly true in the most vulnerable of populations who live in informal settlements, favelas, and refugee camps. Also consistent with our intention of providing a platform for the world’s emerging water leaders and thinkers, in this issue we introduce a new section of NWPP, the Young Professional Articles and Profiles. In this section we aim to profile examples of the work of new and emerging water leaders and thinkers around the world. The Interdisciplinary Studies section presents an interesting study on the significance of growing medication consumption for raw water resources, in contexts of demographic change.
