À propos de l'auteur
Dave “Bio” Baranek enjoyed a successful and satisfying twenty-year career in the United States Navy, starting with assignments to F-14 Tomcat squadrons and the elite Topgun training program, and followed later by assignments to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the US 7th Fleet. Baranek retired from the Navy in 1999 and now works as a defense contractor in the Washington, DC area. He lives in Burke, Virginia.

Dave Baranek?s Before Topgun Days takes us into the making of a US Navy fighter instructor, back when glamour mostly meant a flight suit, a checklist, and the knowledge that if you made a mistake at several hundred knots the sea would not be writing a sympathetic letter. This is the story of learning the trade before the aviator mythology had quite been lacquered into sunglasses, volleyball, and men staring meaningfully at sunsets. Baranek follows the route from keen young naval officer to fighter pilot and instructor, through training squadrons, carrier aviation, dogfighting, weapons work, cockpit discipline, and the general naval habit of turning young men into professionals by giving them machines with alarming thrust and then grading their paperwork. The joy of it is that the book sits in the engine room of the legend.
