Local atmospheric simulations of real city neighborhoods are important to study for urban climate, thermal and wind comfort, and local air quality, including pollution hot spots such as tunnel heads, near a motorway or a busy crossing. When the wind is weak, the thermal and radiative effects become more important together with flow stratification that can inhibit turbulence and mixing in some conditions. In order to take into account atmospheric radiation and the thermal effects of the buildings in simulations of atmospheric flow and pollutant dispersion in urban areas, a three-dimensional atmospheric thermal-radiative scheme in the atmospheric module of the open-source Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model has been developed. The simulation of realistic atmospheric conditions in urban areas made possible by this work can be used for various applications. The author describes the development of this model and presents several results by comparing field data.

Yongfeng QU is a Research and Development engineer who received his double M.S in fluid mechanics and solid mechanics from the University of Paris VI in 2008. From 2008 to 2011, he held a PhD scholarship in environmental science and technology from the University of Paris-Est / École des Ponts ParisTech. His main areas of expertise are environmental fluid mechanics, and his research focuses on numerical modeling of surface energy balance and on full-scale field experiment in the urban areas, including outdoor thermal comfort, air pollutant dispersion, infrared temperature measurement, etc. He has published more than 20 papers on these topics in international journals with peer review and in the proceedings of international conferences. He is a reviewer for serval international ISI journals in numerical environmental modeling and wind engineering. He received several international awards, including the Best-Poster Awards for young researchers at the « 13th international conferences on Harmonisation within Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling for Regulatory Purposes » (2010), the Best-Paper Awards for young researchers at the «31st NATO/SPS International Technical Meeting on Air Pollution Modelling and its Application» (2010) and Research Prize for young researchers at the conferences of « La modélisation des flux au service de l'aménagement urbain » (2012).
