The zebrafish is a tropical freshwater fish belonging to the carp family of the order Cypriniformes. It is a popular aquarium fish native to South America. The name comes from the horizontal blue stripes on their body which resembles a zebra. The zebrafish is an important and widely used vertebrate model organism in scientific research, particularly drug development. It has remarkable regenerative abilities, and has been modified by scientists to produce many transgenic strains.
