Synopsis

After September 11, 2001, Germans' understandings of violence at home and abroad began to change. Violence came to appear transnationally, spectacularly mobile in new ways. This volume explores ideas about "violence elsewhere" in German-language culture since 2001 as they are refracted through cultural, discursive and artistic forms. Here, "elsewhere" can mean violence in distant places, or violence perceived as foreign or past. The volume's nine essays treat works on "violence elsewhere" of many kinds, in genres ranging from classic literary forms to multimedia artworks, film, philosophy, and political discourse.
