An illustrated travelogue from author Roger L. Guffey, When I Was My Father’s Son, tells of the author’s journey of self-discovery, who he is in the context of a complicated relationship with his father and Guffey’s own religious beliefs. The first five years of Guffey’s life were idyllic, with six siblings and both parents at home. All that changed when his father took a job working to build the interstate highway system. His father was only home on the weekends until Guffey was fifteen. Guffey faced many physical and emotional obstacles, including wrestling with nascent homosexual feelings. As older siblings left home to start their own families, he began to feel increasingly isolated from his family. After undergoing a traumatic medical procedure, when his father was not there to help him through it, he began to think of his father very negatively, given the lack of a strong male figure in his life. He would not recover from those discordant feelings of love and respect for his father until well into his thirties. By then, he no longer felt animosity toward his father, and went on to become closer to his father than any of his siblings.Guffey’s story explores in detail the struggles with his own health issues and sexual identity in the shadow of fundamental religious teachings. It is more than a simple biography; it is a mystery with no solution until the final emotional and revealing end. An intimate, personal account of a young man who once had a sense of alienation from his father, When I Was My Father’s Son will inspire men to reflect on their own struggles with their fathers—and it will teach us that nothing is more important than acknowledging their sacrifices and contributions before they pass away.
