"All virtues are rare. Some are especially rare, perhaps because they possess a more delicate grain. Or perhaps there may be lacking first of all a soil of special quality, a more particularly rich ensemble of human and supernatural gifts, which is needed so that they may bloom. We should like to study briefly a few examples of these virtues. We have chosen gratitude, the spirit of recollection, the art of using time, discretion, courage in facing life, magnanimity in suffering, love of reparation, pity for those who suffer, and the apostolic spirit even to the gift of oneself. These essays are not learned studies, designed for the use of psychologists or professional moralists. They are very simple essays, varied in length, for the use of souls of good will who, in acquiring one or the other of these virtues, have met with practical difficulties which they did not expect. Sometimes is it less a question of a supernatural virtue, strictly speaking, than of a quality of a human order, a quality, moreover,worth developing because it will con- tribute much to growth in the spiritual life. Here and there, when the subject seemed to lend itself more readily, we have given illustrations. At certain times, they are more persuasive than the most beautiful theories"--

Fr. Raoul Plus, S.J. (1882-1958), wrote more than forty books to help Christians understand God's love for the soul. His works stress the vital role of prayer in the spiritual life and show how you can live the truths of the Faith. A native of France, Fr. Plus studied abroad because of the 1901 laws against religious orders. As a French army chaplain during World War I, he gave the soldiers talks that were to serve as the material for his first two books, Dieu en nous (God within Us) and L'Idée reparatrice (The Ideal of Reparation), which were translated into multiple languages. For his wartime services, Fr. Plus was decorated with the Croix de Guerre. A renowned preacher and retreat master, Fr. Plus also served as professor of religion and spiritual director at the Université Catholique at Lille and taught at the Institut Catholique in Paris.
