Da Nang, Vietnam, 1969. One Marine's account of his activities in a war zone. Written for the benefit of his children. Like most warriors, Michael did not boast about his life in a war zone. His children would always get vague answers when they confronted their father about his time in Vietnam. Michael, takes us back to his days Just outside the First Marine Airwing base to a hamlet called Dog Patch. Marine Wing Facility Detachment Security, Zulu Company had received Intel from S2 that within Dog Patch, was a series of tunnels that lead to the inside perimeters of the air base. For the past three days, the base received mortar fire originating from Dog Patch. Previous search and destroy units came up empty handed. Major Kawaski held an emergency briefing. With intel that the Viet Cong could have hidden access to the Marine Air Field and could destroy the Squadrons of F-4 Fighters along with numerous UH-1 Hueys and CH30 Chinook helicopters, Major Kawaski assigned 2nd Lieutenant Muser to pick a platoon. Muser’s first mission out of officer’s candidate school and arriving in Vietnam was to clear the hamlet of Dog Patch. Search and Destroy all tunnels.War is Hell.
