Diary of Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy Under Lincoln and Johnson Vol. III offers the view and experiences of Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy during the Civil War, of the Abraham Lincoln administration, and of the Andrew Johnson administration that followed. This volume covers the period of January 1,1867 to June 6, 1869.

It was a lifelong custom of Gideon Welles to keep a diary, including during his years in public office. By 1909, his diaries, edited by Welles's son Edgar, were published.

À propos de l'auteur

GIDEON WELLES (1802-1878), born into a wealthy Connecticut family, studied law, co-founded the Hartford Times in 1826, and joined the Connecticut legislature in 1827 as a Jacksonian Democrat. In 1854, Welles quit the Democrats and joined the Republican Party. In 1856 he founded the Hartford Evening Press, one of the first Republican papers in New England. Due to his strong support for Abraham Lincoln, he became Secretary of the Navy from 1861 to 1869.
