Hilarious, vibrant, magically cohesive despite its seemingly divergent themes, brimming with endorsements of the best music and books you haven't heard or read yet, the Nevada Avenue Outdoor Free Bookshop and its proprietary newsletter burned bright during its short life between August 2020 and December 2021. Located on a well-trafficked corner of Chevy Chase, D.C., the NAOFB started as a way for punk rocker and erstwhile lawyer J. Hunter Bennett to offload his excess music books and noir novels, but swiftly grew from pandemic project to passion project, and from there to neighbourhood fixture and really damn good newsletter. Here you'll find the collected newsletters, each annotated with anecdotes about the contributors, goings-on in the wider world (there were quite a few in 2020-2021!), neighbourhood gossip, and praise from at least two members of Fugazi. C'mon, where else you gonna find Millions of Dead Cops and James Salter in the same place? Featuring interviews with: Michael Hampton (Embrace, The Snakes), Jim Spellman (Velocity Girl, High Back Chairs), Kim Thompson (Delta 72, Cupid Car Club), Geoff Sanoff (Edsel), Seth Lorinczi (Circus Lupus, Vile Cherubs), Peter Cortner (Dag Nasty), Graham McCulloch (Negative Approach, Meatmen), Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady (i.e., Hot Tuna), Danny Ingram (Youth Brigade, Swervedriver), Kim Coletta (Jawbox), Phil Satlof (Tuscadero), And essays by: Terry Banks (Tree Fort Angst, Dot Dash), Nick Pelliciotto (Edsel), Stevie Lizard (Junior Wells), Sal Cannestra (Sleeper/Serpico), Peter Willsey (BST Payback), Katherine Coleman (Mick Jones' Teeth), Seth Lorinczi Peter Cortner.

Hilarious, vibrant, magically drawing cohesion between divergent themes, brimming with endorsements of the best music and books you haven't heard or read yet. J. Hunter Bennett, author of The Prodigal Rogerson and Upside-Down Punks, started a little free punk rock bookstore during the pandemic outside his house on a well-trafficked corner of Chevy Chase, D.C., and published a companion newsletter. It began as a way to offload his excess music books and noir novels, but swiftly grew into a neighborhood fixture and underground punk zine for the modern era. Here you'll find book reviews, band interviews, neighborhood gossip, and praise from at least two members of Fugazi. A touching testament to the DIY spirit, a treasure trove of literary and punk rock recommendations, and a low-key how-to guide for building something unique with your own network of like-minded weirdos. C'mon, where else you gonna find Millions of Dead Cops and James Salter in the same place This riot of a book is graced with an introduction by Jim Spellman of Velocity Girl and a foreword by Anton Bogomazov of the neighborhood's more official bookstore, Politics and Prose.
